About the Virus.

Discovered in 1975 by Yvonne Cossart from healthy blood donor specimens.

Structure: Part of Parvoviridae family where viruses are small,spherical,nonenveloped,single-stranded DNA viruses with a T=1 icosahedral symmetry.  B-19 also has a diameter of 20-25 nanometers,The DNA strand is linear and is either positive or negative and B-19 contains 5,600 bases, also two capsid proteins VP1,and VP2.

Classification:

ICTV(International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses):

Family-Parvoviridae

Subfamily-Parvovirinae
Genus-Erythrovirus-have 60 coat proteins
Species-Parvovirus B-19

Baltimore Classification:Shows regard to various ways of genome replication, and wants to show that all viruses must make positive mRNAs from their genomes in order to make proteins and make copies of themselves.

ssDNA viruses (+) sense DNA

Replication:

Parvovirus B19 does not posses a lytic cycle as fifth’s disease does not destroy the host, so it goes through a lysogenic cycle.
